Spyderco has long been considered a leader in the use of high-performance steels for knives. After years of using the best materials that leading steelmakers could provide, the company decided to create its own alloy. In collaboration withCrucible® Industries, it developed its ownCPM SPY27stainless steel,whereSPYrefers to Spyderco and27is the atomic number ofcobalt(Co).
CPM SPY27 -a proprietary blend of alloys, including vanadium, molybdenum, niobium, nitrogen and cobalt. The high-alloy stainless steel contains1.4%carbon and a1%admixture ofniobium(Nb), one of the best carbides, which contributes to the steel’s wear resistance. Thanks to its properties, the steel holds sharpness for a very long time and guarantees aggressive cuts for a long time. It is easy to sharpen, corrosion resistant and contains a high admixture of14%chromium. It provides good strength and cutting edge retention, as well as a fine-grained structure. Produced byUS Crucible Industriesusing the particle metallurgy /Crucible®ParticleMetallurgy (CPM) method. TheCPMprocess creates a very homogeneous, high-quality steel with excellent dimensional stability, grindability and toughness compared to steels produced by conventional methods.
Ball Bearing-Lock- one of the strongest blade locking mechanisms. Hardened ball bearing housed in a black polymer basket in the open position pressed against the blade by a spring. Made in USA.
Blade – Plain smooth blade brought out with Full Flat Grind. Enlarged 14 mm round SpyderHole cutout (Spyderco patent) for ambidextrous thumb opening. Refined, precision-machined Ball Bearing-Lock Blade locking mechanism guarantees extremely smooth operation. The notched thumb rest (upper jimping) on the back of the blade and the Finger Choil (an undercut for the index finger between the Handle and the cutting edge) make it easier to control the knife.
Handle – profiled, covered with non-slip textured grips in Cobalt Blue, attributed to the Blade with SPY27, provides a comfortable and secure grip. Made of durable, heat- and cold-resistant, chemical-resistant G10 composite. The grips are attached to a sturdy spacer (so-called backspacer / handle grips linkage), which ensures the strength of the construction. The whole thing was fixed with torx screws for easy twisting and unfolding of the folder. A two-position (right/left) polished steel metal clip allows the knife to be carried in tip-up position, with the tip of the blade upward. Enlarged cord hole in the back.
